A few months ago, I watched all of the Star Wars movies for the first time since I was a kid. Growing up, I remember seeing some of the movies with my little brother who loved them, but I had always hated them. To be fair, Star Wars really isn’t a movie geared towards little kids, and I lost interest in anything that didn’t involve cute puppies, the color pink, and the like pretty quickly. Plus, I was that kid who was so easily scared by movies back then, so I really couldn’t take all those light saber fighting scenes.
But, the years have passed, and as my tastes have matured, I’m finally able to really appreciate Star Wars. After seeing the movies again, all I could think was “What have I been missing this whole time?!!” I love the story, the ewoks, the wookies, and R2D2. I LOVE R2D2. I’ve seen all of the movies 3 times in the past few months with the exception of The Force Awakens. I just couldn’t get into it, don’t judge! Here’s hoping the next Star Wars movies will be better.
My best friend Jannah and I had been planning to attend Star Wars Day at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on May the 4th, but unfortunately we didn’t make it out that day because it was storming pretty badly. So, we opted for our own Star Wars celebration on May 14 instead… we had so much fun!
My Princess Leia Disneybound
I have always loved Princess Leia and wanted to do a Star Wars Disneybound inspired by her ever since I saw Lady Damfino’s take on her a few months ago. Fortunately, I had a gorgeous white lace dress from the 1930’s that was given to me years ago, but I had never found the right occasion to wear it until now.
Since Leia’s belt is silver, I paired my dress with all of the silver accessories I could find – vintage earrings, a choker, belt, and cat eye sunglasses with silver rhinestones. Sadly, the rhinestones fell off of the cat eye glasses before the pictures were taken. In the movies, Leia’s weapon of choice has always been a blaster, so I wore this long black snap clutch along my shoulder in place of the blaster. For shoes, I wore white kitten heels.
I really had fun when I did my hair. Instead of the hair buns, I decided to go with a braided updo that looked more like the 1930’s, but still had a definite Princess Leia vibe. So, I just did two half dutch braids and pinned them in the back to create an updo. For a better version of this hairstyle, check out this hair tutorial on Youtube.
Jannah’s R2D2 Disneybound
Jannah loves R2 like I do, so she was so excited to Disneybound as her favorite droid of all time. We decided to stick to R2D2’s 4 main colors – blue, silver, white, and red. We were able to find everything for her outfit at Goodwill besides the blue bow, pearls, earrings, and shoes. She borrowed those items from me.
Our Star Wars Day
When we arrived at Hollywood Studios, we were just in time for the first 15 minute Star Wars show of the day. It was a super fun show that features R2D2, Chewbacca, C3PO, all of the Star Wars villians, and scenes from all 7 of the Star Wars movies.
When Darth Vader walked out, everyone cheered, but when Kylo Ren came, no one said anything.. he can’t even be a cool villain! He’ll always just be a Vader wanna be. Seriously, the kid doesn’t even have his own cool theme song like Vader’s imperial march.
We couldn’t wait to check out the new Star Wars Launch Bay and meet Kylo Ren. As his mother, I had plenty to say to him about his choosing to join the dark side, and as you would expect, Kylo Ren did not want to hear it all.
Our conversation went something like this:
Leia: Kylo Ren! What excuse do you have for joining the dark side? Oh, that’s right. You have none! Your father was a heroic general. I am a princess, and your Uncle Luke is a famous jedi. Stop acting like a privileged, spoiled child! I taught you better than this, and you know it.
Kylo Ren: Go!
Leia: What? What did you just say to me? I am your mother, you will not tell me to go. I’ll leave when I want.
Kylo Ren: stares Leia down
Leia: You’re not even a cool villain like your grandfather was. You don’t even have your own theme song!
Kylo Ren: looks down
After that, we decided that we had had too much of the dark side for one day, so we rode Star Tours twice, watched a group of padwan at the Jedi training temple, and saw every Star Wars show we could find. But, most importantly, we met our favorite wookie in the whole world – Chewbacca! We were much more warmly received by Chewie, and he gave us both a huge hug when he saw us.
Because I was so dressed up, a bunch of people asked me if I worked at Disney in a show. One lady even asked me for my autograph for her 9 year old son who loves Princess Leia. I told her I wasn’t a Disney cast member, but she didn’t care, so I signed her autograph book anyway. Since Disney doesn’t actually have an official Princess Leia at the moment, I guess I was the closest thing to the real Leia that day.
When we weren’t meeting Star Wars characters, signing autographs, watching Star Wars shows, and riding Star Tours, we spent our time seeing the Indiana Jones Show, seeing the Muppets, and riding the Great Movie Ride. Oh, and we just had to explore the really cool area near the Chinese theater with all of the celebrity handprints and autographs. I saw the real Princess Leia, Carrie Fischer’s autograph, and of course I just had to take a picture with Audrey Hepburn’s handprints, one of my favorite actresses of all time.
To end the day, we saw Fantasmic (which I had never seen before) and it was AWESOME. We had a great day, and we had so much fun wearing dapper outfits inspired by some of our favorite Star Wars characters. I can’t wait to bring more Star Wars inspired looks to the parks in the future!
If you want to disneybound but are nervous about it, don’t be. It makes your day at the park even more fun and magical. You’ll find that most people will be quick to compliment your look, and ask you all about it. A Disneybound always makes character experiences so much more fun, too! If anyone gives you negativity about your outfit (which is rare, especially at Disney) remember: “Those who don’t mind matter and those who mind don’t matter.” Just remember that, and you’ll have a wonderful time.
